Toyota Hilux Exhaust Guide: KUN16–26 vs N80 – What to Check Before Ordering

Toyota Hilux exhaust systems should be selected by chassis generation and engine, not by the Hilux name alone. KUN16–26 and N80 vehicles belong to different generations, and system fitment can also vary with cab, wheelbase, engine and factory emissions layout.

Start at the Toyota Hilux exhaust hub, then narrow the catalogue to the correct platform: KUN16–26, N80 or N90.

KUN16–26 or N80?

Confirm the chassis generation before looking at brands or pipe size. The mounting points, lengths and front connections are not something to judge from a photo. If you are unsure, use the model code and build information from the vehicle rather than relying only on registration year.

Engine fitment comes next

Different engines in the same Hilux generation can require different systems. Use the engine/application information on the product listing as the final fitment check. If the listing does not clearly match your engine, ask before ordering.

Cab and wheelbase can change the system

Single-cab, extra-cab and dual-cab layouts can affect exhaust length and routing. Some products are built for a specific wheelbase or body style, so confirm those details whenever the manufacturer lists them.

Check the factory emissions layout

Later vehicles can have more complex factory emissions hardware. Be clear about which section of the exhaust a product replaces and do not assume that two systems with the same advertised pipe diameter perform the same job. Any modification should remain suitable for the vehicle's registration and intended use.

Complete exhaust or replacement section?

If one section has failed, replacing that section may be the most direct fix. If the goal is a broader system change, a matched complete system can reduce uncertainty around flange locations, pipe diameters and connections. Compare what is actually included before comparing the headline price.

What pipe diameter is best?

The answer depends on the engine and the rest of the combination. Diameter affects flow, sound and packaging, and bigger is not automatically better. See our 2.5-inch vs 3-inch exhaust guide for a practical explanation of the trade-offs.

Consider rear clearance and accessories

Towbars, trays, suspension changes, long-range tanks and other accessories can affect rear exhaust clearance. If your Hilux has non-standard equipment underneath or behind the cab, compare the advertised routing with the vehicle before ordering.

Does a Hilux exhaust need tuning?

That depends on how much of the engine combination has changed. If the exhaust is part of a larger package involving intake, boost, fuel or engine-management changes, tuning should be considered as part of that package rather than as an afterthought.
